Main fields of studies: Theory and History of Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, State Law, International Law.
Our doctoral program in law science provides an opportunity to acquire in-depth competencies necessary for independent research work and its completion with original and empirically proven results. Graduates of the program can become law researchers who are focused on the European market and ready to compete internationally. Upon graduation, it is possible to work in scientific institutions as a leading researcher or to apply for the position of a docent, associate professor or professor, to become a sworn advocate, as well as to obtain the status of an expert of the Latvian Council of Science.
Within the framework of the study program it is possible to improve the ability to analyze problems in the theory of law and the history of law, to solve topical issues in the selected fields of law, to implement and develop bachelor and master study programs, as well as to develop skills in academic work and study scientific research methods.
The doctoral program “Law Science” provides an opportunity to develop competencies as well as promote responsibility for outcomes of work in the areas of legal practice. Likewise, the PhD study program in law science promotes research and further education in challenging and unpredictable conditions using new approaches.
The study program is accredited until August 26, 2027.

Under the supervision of the professors of the field, you will analyze problems in the theories of law and the history of law. Attention will be paid to the topical issues of substantive and procedural law in the areas of constitutional, administrative, administrative procedural, criminal, criminal procedural, civil, civil procedural, intellectual property and international law.
The study of problems of all fields of law will be continued, as well as the topical issues in the selected fields of law will be solved. You will have to participate in the implementation of undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as obtain academic skills in academic work by delivering lectures, being the advisor for diploma and master theses. During the development of the thesis you will acquire the skills and abilities to apply scientific research methods. According to the requirements of the doctoral thesis, you will continue the research initiated in the previous years, presenting them at international scientific conferences, and publishing the results of scientific research in internationally recognized scientific journals.
You will pay attention to terminology and the development of scientific research in foreign languages. As a result of the thesis, you will prepare conclusions and proposals for theoretical and practical solution of topical legal problems.
Admission requirements
During the admission process, the applicant's research proposal (volume - up to 10 pages) on the topicality of his / her doctoral thesis and the relevance of the previously acquired master's or professional master's diploma to the field of science is evaluated.
Applicant is required to provide one of the English language certificates mentioned within the Admission information. If the applicant does not have any of the respective English language certificates, however the medium of instruction of his/her master studies was English, he/she will receive a link to Turība University on-line English test after the registration.
