FACULTY OF LAW
Doctoral program
The labor market demands specialists who have knowledge and skills to work with business-related information while providing legal support. In future, the demand for legal science specialists with a specific specialization will grow, which is why the Faculty of Law at Turība University focuses on the studies of law in the context of commercial activities – ensuring that new specialists can successfully apply the knowledge gained in any business field.
At the Faculty of Law, law can be studied in the following study program:
- doctoral study program – “Law Science”.
The academic knowledge gained during the study process is supplemented with guest lectures from practitioners, experience stories, and study trips to legal institutions in Latvia and abroad. The lecturers are professional practitioners in their field, and by providing insights into industry trends with real examples, they help students grasp the nuances of this complex field.
Students of the Faculty of Law, together with their lecturers, go on an educational trip to Hague. This trip is a great opportunity to deepen knowledge about the UN International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, as well as to explore The Hague Academy of International Law.
Additionally, law students participate annually in a mock trial, which aims to promote public awareness and understanding of human rights, as well as to foster the interest of future professionals in this area of law, encouraging young people to choose human rights as their professional specialization.
Turība has a specially designed courtroom – a real courtroom prototype – where students can strengthen their theoretical knowledge and acquire practical skills in litigation, as well as simulate the process of court hearings together with professional lecturers.
During legal education, students can develop logical and critical thinking, analysis, and argumentation skills, which are useful not only in the legal field but also in life overall, as they help in structured thinking, expressing oneself convincingly, and solving complex problems.
In addition to studies – creative projects
The Faculty of Law, in addition to the study process, implements various creative and socially responsible ideas.
In addition to legal knowledge and skills for solving various legal cases, students have the opportunity to join Excellence School for Lawyers of Turība Univeristy, where they can develop leadership skills and learn personal development skills such as public speaking, acting, empathy, business etiquette, and “out of the box” problem-solving, among others. These acquired skills and competencies are essential both in professional work and personal growth.
In the summer of 2023, the Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the wine room Tinto, opened its first Turība Embassy in Riga, which is an excellent example of the university's guiding principle: business thinking in every program! The restaurant is a family business led by Turība’s Faculty of Law lecturer, sworn advocate Liene Cakare.
“Studies are no longer just sitting in classrooms where there is at least a 10-meter distance between the lecturer and the student. Studies mean learning to live and work. And not just listening about life and work, but being part of life and work already during the study process. That is why studying at Turība happens in the city, closer to people, closer to entrepreneurs. We will be in the city and with people, alongside our lecturers in various lectures and, of course, with our students, dreaming and fulfilling dreams together,” says Ivo Krievs, Dean of the Faculty of Law, about the initiative.
The Faculty of Law has also implemented other creative and social initiatives, encouraging students to be socially active and versatile individuals in addition to their professional duties, dedicating a portion of their time to society and making Latvia a better place. For example, students from the Faculty of Law have formed the HELP support team to voluntarily provide legal consultations to children and youth who are orphans or from out-of-home care institutions at the Riga Municipal Children’s Youth Centre. Additionally, the photo project “Out of the Ordinary” was carried out, which allowed the university's lecturers to be seen not only as excellent teachers but also as unique and vibrant personalities.
